Which substrate is best?

Posted on 26 April 2017

At Lamination System, we offer a variety of substrate options for your mounting and signage requirements. But how do you know which one is best for your project? Check out the descriptions below to help you decide:

COREFLUTE

Coreflute is a corrugated twin wall sheet made from polypropylene, or in laymans terms... corrugated plastic. Lightweight, rigid and weatherproof, Corflute is a perfect low-cost material for short-term outdoor signs, but if looked after it should last a lot longer. Only downside for some people is the ridging is often visible through the print. We stock this in white and 5mm thick.

FOAMCORE

Foamcore is a lightweight material made of 3 layers - an inner layer of dense foam that is coated on either side with thin cardboard.  Only suitable for indoor use, Foamcor may bend or warp over time making it most suitable for short-term displays. Foamcore is significantly less expensive than Gatorboard but susceptible to breaking or denting if not handled correctly. It is available in white or black at 5mm thick.

GATORBOARD

Gatorboard is a display board with a dense inner core made of foam and a rigid exterior made of wood-fiber veneer. This exterior is water resistant (not waterproof - for that you need corflute!) and will not easily break or warp. Though made to resist scratching and breaking, Gatorboard is still prone to denting when too much pressure is applied. Due to the acid-free surface and durability gatorboard is more suited to fine art and photography mounting. We stock Gatorboard in 5mm black.

MDF

Your final mounting option is a 9mm MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) which is pine fibre and resin compacted together. MDF has fine and smooth surface ideal for mounting and you can choose from a square or bevelled edge. Being 9mm thick wood, MDF is much heavier than the three aforementioned products but is also more durable and long-lasting. Blockmounting is often used as a budget alternative to framing.

Still unsure which product is best for you? Give our team a call on 1300 099 030 (freecall) or pop in to our friendly reception area and have a look at some samples we have on display. You can also supply your own substrate or we can custom order other mounting products for larger jobs.

One month to go...

One month to go...

There's only one month to go before Pacprint 2017 takes over the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre from 23-26 May.

If you've been following our posts you will know our preperation began some time ago, but our team are crossing things of their checklists at an even faster rate now as the event draws closer. With so much to organise and co-ordinate, it always ends in a mad rush, but for now it's all hands on deck to ensure everything gets done on time and nothing is forgotten.

Laminating machines are being tested... media for demonstation is being printed... laminting film is being packed... and the Lamination System team are getting excited!

Make sure you visit the Laminating Experts on Stand E60 for all your laminating requirements.

Anti-Scuff Matt is the flavour of the month

Posted on 6 April 2017

Wow! Anti-scuff Matt Laminate has certainly increased in popularity over the last 12 months and March saw us doing more Anti Scuff Matt Laminating jobs than ever before.

While regular Matt Laminate gives a great finish to your job, it is prone to marking and can scuff quite easily (most noticeable when printing with a solid colour like black or blue).

The Anti-Scuff Laminating Film does exactly what it says and prevents all these general markings. This is due to a specially designed, hard-coated layer which protects the look and feel of the matt finish. This ensures that even after binding and post-processing, the job still looks perfect. Compatible with spot UV varnishing and foiling, anti-scuff matt film has been around for some time and is now available in both offset and digital grade.

Although there is a slight cost increase compared with normal Matt Laminate, the overall protection is worth it to get the longest lifespan and high-end result from your product.

This film is available for purchase or alternatively you can send your job in and we will laminate it for you. Jump on the bandwagon and phone Alana or Sarah for a quote on 1300 099 030 or send us an email.

We are also planning to bring in some Soft Touch Laminate with our next film shipment, so keep your ear to the ground for more information on this in coming months!
